Diabetes Education

Millinocket Regional Hospital’s Diabetes Education Program is designed to help participants learn how to manage their diabetes through a comprehensive education program. The Diabetes education team includes a Diabetes Nurse educator and a Dietitian. The Nurse Educator assists with insulin adjustment, pump training, and a continuous glucose monitoring program while the Registered Dietitian provides Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) as part of the diabetes self management program.

There are four, two hour classes that provide the participants with information about understanding and controlling their diabetes. A support person is encouraged to attend these classes at no additional cost. One month after the class ends, participants meet individually with the nurse educator to review their progress. These sessions are held at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.

The DSMT (Diabetes Self Management Training Program) formally called ADEF meets the standards set by the State of Maine as well as the National Standards set by the ADA.
