General Surgery

Millinocket Regional Hospital offers a full range of general surgery interventions as well as scopes, such as colonoscopies and endoscopies; an effective way to see what is going on inside the body without the use of surgery.

Our General Surgery team includes highly skilled surgeons, Mark Kowalski, MD and M.H. Niayesh, MD, FRCS, FACS, as well as Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Registered Nurses and Surgical Technicians.  They use the latest medical technology to ensure every patient receives safe, high quality services.

In addition to traditional “open” surgeries, Dr. Kowalski and Dr. Niayesh also do laparoscopic surgeries.  This means that, rather than making a large incision, the surgeon is able to complete the surgery by make small incisions in the stomach and using an instrument outfitted with a camera and light called a laparoscope.  Laparoscopic surgeries result in shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, less pain and bleeding after the operation and reduced scarring.
